Frog Heaven

We woke up to find that Iveth had organized a trip to a place called Frog Heaven, we piled into the van and headed over the hill into the rain forest and through the mist. It was raining and we couldn't see a great deal. We headed into a small area called Sarapiqui, Heredia. It was about an hour drive from our house we were staying in but in a straight line it would have been about twenty minutes.

We were met by a man named Jose who said that we were there for a fun time, fun time not really Boston stepped right onto a fire ant hill and was quickly screaming covered in ants and they were crawling everywhere. I picked him up  and tried to brush all the ants that were quickly crawling all over him and in his shoes, they were everywhere.

Boston wasn't keen to try put back on his shoes or carry on into the rain forest. But we convinced him to keep going and that all the ants were off him.

Where we were the frog heaven was about an acre of planted rain forest behind Jose house. They had purposely built and regrown the plants for the past nine years because before that they had been farming. It was a great tour because of the following reasons.

We were not constantly hiking for miles to see things, everything was close to his home and his father had been out before us to spot the frogs and find out where they were.

Jose had reintroduced many of the frogs back into the rain forest himself, growing them out in tanks before releasing them into the forest. He also had small containers and black polythene pools of stagment water all over the forest so the frogs would lay their eggs. As it rains most days it kept the water from turning really bad.

We could see tons of tadpoles swimming in the water so they were doing their job. He also had a running natural river through the forest. Over all I don't think you could beat this tour. We saw tucains and a sloth.

The frogs were so camouflaged that often it was hard to spot them unless they were pointed out. Dani really enjoyed this trip because she is so into frogs and reptiles that she had a look of sheer delight on her face all morning.

Jose liked to dable in photography a bit so he took over our cell phone cameras to get a perfect shot of different frogs.

I couldn't believe that a decade before this whole area had been farm land, there was a huge paddock on the side that showed that what it had looked like. bare and baron. But it had recovered extremely fast, and the trees were so high you wouldn't have known that it hadn't been that way the whole time.
